We will hear from Prof. Hans Malmström about “Cost(s) and benefit(s) of English-medium education – what we (don’t) know”. Please find below the abstract and the speaker biography.

Abstract: Stakeholders and researchers in higher education have long debated the consequences – positive as well as negative – of disciplinary teaching and learning based on English-medium instruction (EMI). A key assumption of EMI is that students’ academic learning through English should be at least as good as learning through their first language and that there is (at least some) acquisition of English. In this seminar presentation, Hans Malmström will speak to both of these assumptions, highlighting recent research with students as well as teachers learning and working in English-medium education.

Speaker: Hans Malmström is Professor of Communication and Learning in Science at Chalmers University of Technology. His primary research interests are within the areas of integrating content and language/communication in higher education (ICLHE), English-Medium Instruction (EMI) and second language acquisition (particularly vocabulary).
