In a research project at KTH called FLIGHT, "Decreased CO2-emissions in flight-intensive organisations: from data to practice?, we who flies where and when at the university using large amounts of data. We are also interesting in exploring how we can use data about flying at KTH as a means to go from knowledge to action. For some time now we have experimented with using poker chips and data physicalisation as a way to represent and materialise the CO2 emissions from academic flying in order to make it possible to perceive, analyse, discuss, reflect and act upon this data and knowledge. In particular, we focus on divisions and how this method can be used as a way to present data on how a division flies to employees Often we are met with strong reactions and surprise when we present them to people (see attached picture for an example). This method is something we want to explore further and evaluate together with you! We are now looking for participants to take part in a workshop where we will explore our method of representing data closer and what it could contribute with when the aim is open up for new discussions, action and concrete plans to reach our climate goals. We are specifically looking for employees and students currently affiliated with KTH or other universities in Stockholm. The workshop will be IRL on KTH campus sometime during May / June, depending on the availability of the participants. The workshop is planned to take 2 hours. In this seminar by Dr. Klaus Radermacher, organized by the KTH Centre for Sustainable Aviation (CSA) and Transportföretagen, we take a holistic approach trying to evaluate the actual total emissions of different means of transportation. The seminar will be introduced with two short presentations from both organizations. More information about the event is provided below. If you would like to attend the seminar, please register at the following link (Last day to register is May 23th). https://www.kth.se/form/registration-seminar Speaker: Dr. Klaus Radermacher Title: We calculate wrong! -A Holistic Ecological Assessment of Transportation Systems - Time: Tuesday 31 May, 10:00-12:30 (followed by lunch) Place (hybrid): KTH and via Zoom (exact location and Zoom link will be sent later to the ones registered). Abstract: Few other topics are currently being discussed as intensively and emotionally as the "ecological foot-print" of various transportation systems, usually reduced to more or less correct figures on CO2 and NOx emissions. Such discussions often result in highly simplified statements such as "taking the train is environmentally friendly", "driving a car is harmful to the environment" and "flying is even more harmful". Klaus Radermacher will demonstrate in his presentation that an appropriate evaluation is much more complex and that it is not sufficient to measure only the exhaust gases at the tailpipe in order to take the environmental aspect adequately into account. The fact that infrastructure is always necessary to provide any kind of transport service has so far largely been ignored. The CO2 footprint of transportation infrastructure includes the necessary routes (e.g., roads, rails), nodes (e.g., train stations, airports, parking), control infrastructure (e.g., signal boxes, switches, signaling systems, air traffic control systems, traffic lights, traffic signs) and it is enormous. Furthermore, physical aspects of transportation are considered, as they have a significant impact on the efficiency of the various transportation systems due to their inherent motion sequences. Bio of the speaker: Dr. Klaus Radermacher Klaus Radermacher has more than 30 years of professional experience; he successfully held management positions (C-level) in large international corporations as well as in Start-Up companies, two of which he founded himself. He is an expert on the "Holistic Analysis of Complex Systems"; his areas of expertise include Innovation Management, Telecommunications, Automotive & Transport, IT management, Internet technologies, Venture Capital & Finance, to name just a few. In his previous responsibilities as CEO, CTO and other senior management positions in Germany and the US, organizations led by him received multiple awards and prizes, e.g., the "Ludwig Erhard Preis" (German National Excellence Award) and prizes at the European Excellence Award in 2005, to name just a few. Klaus holds a Ph.D. and a diploma (M.Sc.) in Computer Science (minor in Economics) from the University of Karlsruhe; he also studied at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, after having received a scholarship by the state of Massachusetts. Klaus is the author/co-author of a variety of publications: textbooks, journal papers, contributions to books and papers; he is also the co-author of a patent registered in the US and in Europe.
