From dobsicek at chalmers.se Mon Mar 4 11:16:42 2024 From: dobsicek at chalmers.se (Miroslav Dobsicek) Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2024 10:16:42 +0000 Subject: [All.non-board.wacqt] Quantum Testbed starts its operation Message-ID: <648EC57D-BE0E-412E-A5DA-FCC9F763ED19@chalmers.se> Dear IAB-members and WACQT researchers, It is with pleasure to let you know that the WACQT Quantum Testbed run by Chalmers Next Labs starts its operations. We are in the process of hiring additional staff, equipping our lab, and rolling out our first set of services. With immediate availability, we are now ready to provide support & help with quantum algorithms, and execution of quantum algorithms on IBM Quantum Services which feature a number of NISQ processors with a size of up to 133 qubits. The customer support team in the Quantum Helpdesk, can help you to run quantum algorithms, help to optimize algorithm performance, and interpret results. For experienced researchers, there will be a possibility to run quantum algorithms on their own. A prerequisite for this possibility is that your respective home institution or company signs the End User Agreement for usage of the IBM Quantum Services and then each individual researcher signs an Individual Understanding of using the service as facilitated by the Quantum Testbed at Chalmers Next Labs. We are currently working on legal aspects of these contracts. We expect that the text of Individual Understanding will be available within 10 days, which will allow immediate onboarding of WACQT researchers at Chalmers, and the text of End User Agreement will be available in at most 3 weeks. This will allow onboarding of all WACQT researchers from all partners. The Quantum Helpdesk and access to IBM Quantum Services are free of charge for WACQT researchers both from industrial partners and universities. At the moment, these two services are also exclusive -- the Quantum Testbed will start supporting other interested parties at a later stage and under different conditions. It is important to note that both the capacity of the customer support team and IBM Quantum Services are shared resources, with best effort access, and ensuring a fair share usage is at the sole discretion of the Quantum Testbed. At a later stage, the Quantum Testbed will establish guidelines for handling of all projects to ensure a systematic and transparent approach to the fair share usage. To start with, all current projects run by WACQT researchers automatically qualify and can fully utilize offered services. Next to access to 133 and 127 qubit NISQ devices, the IBM Quantum Service also offers a broad range of educational resources, community meetings, and exclusive events. After signing the End User Agreement, each WACQT partner will become a member of the IBM Quantum Network with eligibility to use these resources. Travel costs related to attending events should be covered by the end user. We at the Quantum Testbed at Chalmers Next Labs sincerely hope that WACQT researchers will enjoy and use our first set of services. To start using them, please contact: Mårten Skogh, skoghm at chalmers.se, and Pontus Vikstål, vikstal at chalmers.se at the Quantum Helpdesk. They can help you with quantum algorithms and they will also collect your expressed interest in signing the End User Agreement and Individual Understanding. We look forward to seeing both our "old" colleagues and those of you who have joined since last May-meeting. This is a great occasion to get an update on the activities in the Centre, listen to interesting talks, network and have a good time together! Our scientific advisory board will attend the presentations and poster sessions, talk to people (incl a lunch with senior PhD students and postdocs) and give feedback to the Board and Centre PIs on the activities in WACQT. Please make the WACQT May meeting a priority, since it is the one time of the year when we all meet in person. Registration is open until 26th March. Please, do register by this date. It helps a lot. We try to keep our mailing-list updated, but rely on your input. Please verify that your newest WACQT-colleagues also got this invitation, and if someone is missing, pls inform me. Would be great to have more! The mailing list was recently updated, so for some this is the first time you see this survey. Btw The "it" in the three retrospective items is the open culture of WACQT. Yours, Johan From: Johan Veiga Benesch Sent: den 27 februari 2024 14:49 To: WACQT alla utom styrelser (all.non-board.wacqt at lists.chalmers.se) Subject: WACQT survey on open culture Dear WACQT team, During the May meeting 2023 we got overall positive and encouraging feedback from our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). However, the SAB also flagged some concerns regarding open scientific culture. These were subsequently discussed with both the management group and the Board, after which the Director made a statement enforcing the open culture within WACQT. At a later Board meeting in 2023, the proposal was made to follow up on the development of these issues. Hence, we now launch a survey with both the intent to receive your feedback and to gauge changes since May 2023. In SAB's report of 2023 is stated: "The leadership team should establish the desired culture and expectations for the Centre. Absolutely need to fix the problem of some students being told not to communicate within the Centre what they are working on. We recommend that every PhD student within WACQT be entitled to have a second supervisor and/or a mentor, perhaps from a different topic/pillar or different institution, not connected to their primary supervisor, with whom they are encouraged and entitled to discuss all aspects of their research and academic career (IP considerations permitting)." "PhD students also expressed a desire to be better informed about research in WACQT outside their own immediate field of research". Note the statement from the Director in the 12th newsletter: "As members of WACQT you are not only allowed to talk to other people in WACQT to share ideas and results, you actually have an obligation to do so. It's only by discussing with each other that we can make real progress. Of course we must acknowledge other people's ideas and contributions. That is how we build trust. It is clear that there can be tricky issues if you for instance want to patent something, however the default should always be that we discuss openly within WACQT." This survey is about open culture in terms of how and at what level we collaborate and discuss science and technical progress, and how information about that is shared within WACQT. Your replies will be aggregated by myself and shared with the management group, the board, and the SAB. Importantly, all answers will be treated anonymously. You can access the survey here: https://forms.office.com/e/jVbqxdguk3 Please reply latest by Friday 22 March 2024. We might repeat this again in 2025.
