From johan.benesch at chalmers.se Tue Feb 27 14:49:13 2024 From: johan.benesch at chalmers.se (Johan Veiga Benesch) Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2024 13:49:13 +0000 Subject: [All.non-board.wacqt] WACQT survey on open culture Message-ID: Dear WACQT team, During the May meeting 2023 we got overall positive and encouraging feedback from our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). However, the SAB also flagged some concerns regarding open scientific culture. These were subsequently discussed with both the management group and the Board, after which the Director made a statement enforcing the open culture within WACQT. At a later Board meeting in 2023, the proposal was made to follow up on the development of these issues. Hence, we now launch a survey with both the intent to receive your feedback and to gauge changes since May 2023. In SAB's report of 2023 is stated: "The leadership team should establish the desired culture and expectations for the Centre. Absolutely need to fix the problem of some students being told not to communicate within the Centre what they are working on. We recommend that every PhD student within WACQT be entitled to have a second supervisor and/or a mentor, perhaps from a different topic/pillar or different institution, not connected to their primary supervisor, with whom they are encouraged and entitled to discuss all aspects of their research and academic career (IP considerations permitting)." "PhD students also expressed a desire to be better informed about research in WACQT outside their own immediate field of research". Note the statement from the Director in the 12th newsletter: "As members of WACQT you are not only allowed to talk to other people in WACQT to share ideas and results, you actually have an obligation to do so. It's only by discussing with each other that we can make real progress. Of course we must acknowledge other people's ideas and contributions. That is how we build trust. It is clear that there can be tricky issues if you for instance want to patent something, however the default should always be that we discuss openly within WACQT." This survey is about open culture in terms of how and at what level we collaborate and discuss science and technical progress, and how information about that is shared within WACQT. Your replies will be aggregated by myself and shared with the management group, the board, and the SAB. Importantly, all answers will be treated anonymously. You can access the survey here: https://forms.office.com/e/jVbqxdguk3 Please reply latest by Friday 22 March 2024. We might repeat this again in 2025.
